Some bloggers are born with a knack for weaving words into a tapestry of ideas, images, imaginations while others struggle to write creatively including me.
It doesn’t mean there is something wrong with some of us, it’s just that we have different ways to boost our creativity. In other words, we get inspired by different things. One thing could mean something else to another.
For instance, sitting inside a quiet room with a window overlooking a natural view can spark ideas for my brain, while for others it could be sitting by the beach, listening to the sounds of the crashing waves.
However, creativity is something that needs to challenged, trained, and constantly developed just like a muscle.
In this blog, I will share some activities that can boost creativity and get you ready for your next writing task.
Without further ado:
5 Activities to Boost Creativity
As I mentioned earlier, bloggers have different ways to boost their creativity in order to write effectively. Here, I will mention the most common activities that bloggers use to spark new ideas or inspiration. These activities have also help me deal with writer’s block so as to improve my writing. If you’re struggling with generating new ideas, you can try out these activities and see which one works for you.
There are times when you feel that you have nothing to write about or when you are not in the mood for writing. It can feel overwhelming when you have already set yourself up to write that day. Some resort to procrastinating until the last minute, in hopes that the fear of the deadline might motivate them to write. But then again writing at the last minute is not always productive. The work you produce can seem rushed and of poor quality.
If you’re facing this kind of dilemma, you could do freewriting instead of waiting for inspiration to come to you. Freewriting is defined as the practice of writing down all your thoughts without stopping. In freewriting, you have no regard for spelling or grammar. You jot down the first thing that comes into your mind. One thing I love about freewriting is that it helps you generate new ideas without distracting thoughts. You can start freewriting by setting a timer for yourself to write for 20 minutes. You’ll be surprised by how many ideas you’ve come up with through that exercise.
Journaling is another way to boost your creativity as a blogger. Before I began blogging, I used to journal a lot. I wrote about how my day went, my feelings. Sometimes, I wrote about people and places I’ve been to. So whatever I wrote in my journal didn’t matter to me. However, it helped me sharpen my sense of observation.
If you’re struggling with creativity, try journaling. It doesn’t have to be something really serious like you do when you’re blogging.
There are some free apps you could download and use to write down what’s on your mind. But if you like physical journaling, you can buy a journal from a bookstore and bring it with you anytime you feel like writing.
In journaling, you can simply write about anything that piques your interest and you never know, you could use this as inspiration for your next blog post.
3. Read widely
When you read widely, you start to learn about topics you’ve never heard about which helps you build new ideas. As your brain starts to open up to new ideas, you form unique connections between the various topics.
Bloggers that read widely have interesting perspectives to share with their audience which makes them come back for more. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut with what to write, simply read something like a blog, a novel, or anything that will help you learn something new about the subject matter or discover new ideas.
4. Listening to music
According to a study, music helps us be more creative. For me, I like to listen to lo-fi hip hop music, classical music, and Jazz beats whenever I am writing because it helps me relax and allows my mind to wander freely.
If you have a favorite genre of music that can be a source of inspiration to you, listen to it whenever you blog.
5. Spend time with creative people
I can’t emphasize how important it is to spend time with creative people. When I first started blogging, I didn’t know what to do with my blog except that I wanted to share my work with an audience. However, joining a community of creatives such as the Afrobloggers has really helped me learn many things about my craft, and also I got the chance to connect with many talented bloggers. By reading some of their work, I was able to improve on my writing and discover new topic ideas that I never thought about.
